Who are you? I am June Curley, a Perioperative nurse and the Laser Safety Officer for Surgical Services.
What is your educational background? I received my RN Diploma from Montreal General Hospital (many years ago!), my BSN from Penn State in 1995 and my CMLSO in 2008.
Where do you work? I have always worked in the Operating Room. I have been at Tampa General, a Level 1 Trauma Center with 38 operating rooms since 2005.
When did you start working with lasers? How long have you worked with lasers? I started working with lasers around 1987 at Hershey Medical Center in Hershey, Pa. Becoming the LSO just kind of evolved. I was using lasers so often, I decided to take MLSO training, then-voila!! I was named the LSO!
Becoming an LSO
How did you become the LSO? Shortly after coming to Tampa General, I saw that the CMLSO exam was going to be offered here in Tampa. I did not want to lose my skills and the hospital was willing to sponsor me, then voila! I became LSO once again.
Do you like being the LSO? Challenges of “today’s” LSO? It is definitely an honor and a privilege to be the LSO, not to mention a huge responsibility. The biggest challenge is establishing and maintaining the safest environment for the staff and patients. This takes the support of a dedicated committee, and a network of resources. I currently oversee eleven lasers.
Becoming a CMLSO
How has becoming certified helped and/or benefited you in your career? Being certified validates my knowledge and understanding of issues relating to lasers. It has taken me to" the next level" and given me the opportunity to expand my personal career goals. |
