Volume 6 - Issue 1

Ready to apply?
Executive Director's Message

Since this is the first issue of 2014, I was searching for a quote to share with you, something about the new year or new opportunities, and happened on this one:

“The secret of success in life is for a man to be ready for his opportunity when it comes”
–Benjamin Disraeli

It may not be the typical “Happy New Year” you were expecting, but it does raise the question, are you ready when an opportunity comes your way?

As a CLSO or CMLSO, you chose and met the challenge of becoming certified, you took the opportunity to demonstrate your knowledge and expertise in the area of laser safety, enabling you to enhance the credibility of your laser safety recommendations to your peers and management. Are you continuing to take opportunities as they present themselves to maintain your certification?

Certification maintenance requirements are listed on the BLS website , as well as in the CLSO and CMLSO Certification Maintenance Manuals. Continuing education activities are required to maintain certification; demonstration of professional development activities ensures continued competency.

Search for the opportunities featured in this issue of the BLS News & Review to add to your CM points, including the overview of the revised ANSI Z136.1-2014 standard (participate on a standards committee), an announcement of the 10th annual LSO Workshop (present a paper, attend the workshop), a special membership rate offered by the LIA (membership in a related professional society), and Laser U and Save the Date courses (continuing education).

To those CLSOs and CMLSOs with cycles that ended on December 31, 2013, don't let this opportunity to renew slip away! Call us to review your points today; restore your active status by submitting your CM worksheet accompanied with the applicable fees (recertification and late). These will be accepted up to and including May 31, 2014. After that time, it will be necessary to retake the exam to become active again.

If you have any questions regarding activities for certification maintenance, please contact the BLS at 407.985.3810 or email bls@lasersafety.org.

Happy New Year!

Barbara Sams
Executive Director
Board of Laser Safety

Featured CLSO, Jodi Ploquin

Many professional opportunities have resulted from being certified, in particular being a CLSO. Starting out in medical facilities, I did consider CMLSO certification, but in the Province of Alberta, in order to be an Authorized Radiation Protection Agency offering laser safety services, CLSO designation is required. Secondly, in the medical field, most professions require certification and certification maintenance. This requirement in laser safety helps the profession, and those individuals working in it, to be taken seriously.... (more)

Featured CMLSO, Raphael Darvish

Being a CMLSO has given me both the confidence to do my job and the credibility to help other hospitals, facilities, and medical offices correctly establish a Safety Program and get their own LSO certified. The largest single challenge over the last 25 years is keeping up with the changes in equipment, application, and regulation by different states and organizations. But the decision to step into the world of medical lasers and the duties of the CMLSO continue to be a true life changer for me and I would not change a thing.... (more)
