Executive Director's Message

The BLS is having a great year so far. As of the publishing of this newsletter

we have already administered more exams this year than all of last year!

The word is spreading and the value of being a CLSO/CMLSO is gaining more

awareness. Let's keep the ball rolling by continuing to contribute to

the newsletter, the laser safety bulletin board and encouraging other

LSOs to become certified. In July I attended the 2007 LSO Workshop hosted

by Argonne National Lab. This event is key for laser safety professionals

to learn more about laser safety and to network with others sharing the

same concerns. Next year the BLS plans to be a part of the planning and

organization of this meeting, another added benefit for CLSOs and CMLSOs.

Please enjoy this issue of the e-newsletter and as usual, please contact

me if you have any questions, comments or just want to chat.

Laser Safety Article

Make Laser Safety a Priority

Laser safety awareness is something some of us take for granted. Warning

stickers, signage, lockouts, and micro switch panic buttons delineate

our workspaces with clearly defined safety zones. Click

here to read full article.

Handy Hints

This section is intended to give hints and tips on laser safety. If you

would like to contribute to this section of the newsletter please email

your hint or tip to bls@lasersafety.org.

Here are some to get us started:

  • Florescent papers will produce a visible spot when hit by 800 nm beams, which can be seen through most 800 nm eyewear.
  • Do you have perimeter guards or beam blocks with sharp edges? Tygontubing, split down the

middle fits well on the edges of beam blocks.

2007 LSO Workshop

The 2007 LSO Workshop was held July 17-19 at Argonne National Lab in

Argonne, IL. Attendance was just over 120 with a large number being CLSOs!

Safety presentations were given on research applications, nanotechnology,

non-beam hazards, ANSI standards updates, safety programs and eyewear

and bioeffects. A special tour of Argonne was provided and we visited

several lab areas. Special thanks to CLSO Bruce Murdoch and Argonne for

hosting the event. Next years workshop will be held in New Mexico with

help from Los Alamos and Sandia National Labs. The BLS is planning on

having a role in planning and organizing of the event. Stay tuned for

more information in the next newsletter and on our website.

ANSI Update

November 28, 2007 - ICES TC95, THz Ad Hoc Working Group Meeting, Irving,

TX. The purpose of this one-half day meeting is to examine recent research

in the wavelength region that overlaps the IEEE Radiofrequency/Microwave

standard (IEEE/ANSI C95.1-2005) and the Z136 laser standard (ANSI Z136.1-2007). Although

the MPEs are effectively the same at the frequency/wavelength interface

between the two standards (300 GHz/1 mm), they were predominantly derived

by the extrapolation of research results relatively far removed from 300

GHz. The ad hoc will examine new and pertinent research in this region in

order to confirm or revise the current MPEs based on a scientifically defensible

rationale. For additional information, contact Ron Petersen at r.c.petersen@ieee.org.

February 8, 2008 - ASC Z136 Annual Meeting - Orlando, FL. The annual

meeting will be held at the Holiday Inn Select, Orlando International

Airport starting at 8am Friday morning. Various subcommittee meetings

will be held in conjunction with the annual meeting beginning on Wednesday,

Feb 6 (SSC-6) and concluding Saturday, Feb 9 (SSC-3). Meetings schedules

and hotel reservation information will be posted on the z136.org

website. If you are interested in participating or observing the meeting(s),

please contact Barbara Sams at bsams@lia.org.

If you are interested in joining a committee of subcommittee contact

Barbara Sams at Laser Institute of America (bsams@lia.org)

or visit www.z136.org.

Remember, you can earn valuable Certification Maintenance Points

by participating in standards committees!

ILSC 2009

Save the date! March 23-26, 2009 - John Ascuaga’s Nugget Hotel

- Reno, Nevada. As information becomes available the BLS will report it

in the e-newsletter.
